Description

The striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is a small North American mammal known for its distinctive black fur with white stripes running down its back and its powerful defense mechanism—a strong-smelling spray. Found in diverse habitats across the United States, Canada, and parts of Mexico, the striped skunk is omnivorous, feeding on insects, small mammals, fruits, and plants. Primarily nocturnal, it is often seen foraging at night. When threatened, the skunk will warn potential predators by stamping its feet before releasing a foul-smelling spray from its anal glands, a highly effective deterrent. Despite their reputation, striped skunks play a valuable role in controlling insect populations and are generally non-aggressive if left undisturbed.

Obverse

Depicts an official emblem of the Laurent Kabila regime: a mature male lion standing to the left amid the grass, symbolizing strength and authority. Above the lion is the country’s name in French, and the denomination of the issue is placed below.

Kabila’s regime, which began in 1997 after he overthrew Mobutu Sese Seko, was characterized by efforts to rebuild the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) after decades of dictatorship. His government sought to restore national sovereignty, but faced internal conflict and external pressures, particularly during the Second Congo War.
