The giant pangolin (Smutsia gigantea) is the largest species of pangolin, native to the tropical forests and woodlands of central and West Africa. It is distinguished by its large size, reaching up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in length, including its tail. Like all pangolins, the giant pangolin is covered in tough, overlapping scales made of keratin, providing protection from predators. It is nocturnal and feeds primarily on ants, termites, and other insects, using its long, sticky tongue to extract its prey. Unfortunately, the giant pangolin is critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching for its meat and scales, which are used in traditional medicine. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this unique and elusive species.
