The striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is a small, nocturnal mammal native to North America, known for its distinctive black-and-white coloration and its unique defense mechanism. It has a glossy black coat with prominent white stripes running from its head down its back, often splitting into two lines along its sides. This bold pattern acts as a warning to potential predators.
When threatened, the striped skunk can spray a pungent, sulfuric liquid from glands near its tail, effectively deterring most attackers. It primarily feeds on insects, small rodents, fruits, and vegetation, adapting its diet seasonally. Preferring open areas such as fields, forests, and suburban edges, the striped skunk is a versatile and resilient species, playing a key role in pest control within its habitat.
