Description

The America the Beautiful Quarters are a series of 25-cent pieces (quarters) issued by the United States Mint from 2010 until at least 2021.

Block Island is located off the coast of the U.S. state of Rhode Island, named after Dutch explorer Adriaen Block. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 14 miles (23 km) east of Montauk Point, Long Island, New York, and 13 miles (21 km) south from mainland Rhode Island, from which it is separated by Block Island Sound. The Nature Conservancy added Block Island to its list of "The Last Great Places", which consists of 12 sites in the western hemisphere. About 40 percent of the island is set aside for conservation. Much of the northwestern tip of the island is an undeveloped natural area and resting stop for birds along the Atlantic flyway.

Quarters are issued depicting designs of national parks and sites in the order of which that park or site was deemed a national site. Release date (national site date): November 13, 2018 (April 12, 1973).

Depicts a black-crowned night-heron flying over a view from the beach at Cow Cove looking towards Sandy Point. The North Light lighthouse is seen in the background. Design candidates were developed in consultation with representatives of Block Island National Wildlife Refuge.

The black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), commonly shortened to just night heron in Eurasia, is a medium-sized heron found throughout a large part of the world, except in the coldest regions and Australasia (where it is replaced by the closely related rufous night heron, with which it has hybridized in the area of contact).

Block Island North Light (Lighthouse), built in 1867, is a historic lighthouse on Block Island, Rhode Island (New Shoreham).
