Description

Rostock is the largest city in the north German state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Rostock is on the Warnow river; the district of Warnemünde 12 kilometres (7 miles) north of the city centre is directly on the Baltic Sea coast.

Rostock Port stands for one of the capable and modern ports on the southern Baltic Sea. Over 7,900 port calls per year by ferries, RoRo-vessels, cargo vessels and cruise ships attest to this. No other German Baltic Sea port offers such a wide range of services as the Rostock seaport.

Rostock is also home to the most significant German ferry port. It is the main base for ferry operators Scandlines and TT-Line, which both connect Rostock with major Scandinavian destinations. Furthermore, Rostock receives the highest number of cruise tourists in Germany every year.

The national emblem of the German Democratic Republic featured a hammer and a compass (drawing tool), surrounded by a ring of rye. The hammer represented the workers in the factories. The compass represented the intelligentsia, and the ring of rye the farmers.
