Description

The America the Beautiful Quarters are a series of 25-cent pieces (quarters) issued by the United States Mint from 2010 until at least 2021.

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration and evolution — processes that thrust a bare land up from the sea, creating unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. Created to preserve the natural setting of Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, it is one of the most fascinating biological landscapes in the world. The Hawaiian Archipelago, located more than 320 000 km (2,000 miles) from the nearest continental land mass, is the most geographically isolated group of islands on Earth.

Quarters are issued depicting designs of national parks and sites in the order of which that park or site was deemed a national site. Release date (national site date): August 27, 2012 (August 1, 1916).

In the quarter's design, Mount Kilauea is erupting, shooting smoke and ash and cinders into the air while oozing fiery hot lava.

Kilauea is the youngest and most active Hawaiian shield volcano, located on the southern part of the Island of Hawai'i, known as Big Island. Hawai'i is the southernmost and largest of the island chain, which owes its existence to the very active Hawaiian hot spot. Kilauea volcano is near-constantly erupting from vents either on its summit (caldera) or on the rift zones. At present, Kilauea volcano is still having one of the most long-lived eruptions known on earth, which started in 1983 on the eastern rift zone and has mainly been concentrated at the Pu'u 'O'o vent.
