Description

Benazir Bhutto (1953–2007) was a Pakistani politician who served as Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996. She was the first woman to head a democratic government in a Muslim majority nation. Ideologically a liberal and a secularist, she chaired or co-chaired the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) from the early 1980s until her assassination in 2007.

Obverse

Depicts Benazir Bhutto portrait dividing dates of her birth and death, with the inscription "A respectable Benazir Bhutto was martyred" in Urdu above.

Reverse

Crescent and Star and value above wheat ears, with "Government of Pakistan" written above in Urdu, and date below.

The star and crescent is an iconographic symbol used in various historical contexts but most well known today as a symbol of the former Ottoman Empire and, by popular extension, the Islamic world. It appears on the national flag and state emblem of Pakistan.
