Description

Egyptian textile industry is very ancient dating back to the age of the pharaohs. The country is the pivot for the vertically integrated textile industry in the Middle Eastern region. The country involves the complete production process right from the cultivation of cotton to the making of yarns, fabrics, and ready-made apparels. The textile and apparel industry is the second-largest sector, next to agro, and plays a major role in shaping the Egyptian economy.

Obverse

Depicts an ancient Egyptian figure holding a cotton spool in her hand, dates 1927 and 1977 as well as the inscription '50th Anniversary of the Misr Spinning and Weaving Company in El-Mahalla El-Kubra' above.

The Misr Spinning and Weaving Company, also known as the Ghazl El-Mahalla, is a large, publicly owned textile company located in El-Mahalla El-Kubra within the Nile Delta of Egypt, approximately 80 kilometers north of Cairo. Egypt's largest industrial facility, Ghazl El-Mahalla employs over 25,000 workers.

Depicts the logo of Banque Misr (crowned bust of Cleopatra looking left) right of value, legend "Arab Republic of Egypt" and dates (Gregorian and Hegira) above.

Banque Misr is an Egyptian bank co-founded by industrialist Joseph Aslan Cattaui Pasha and economist Talaat Harb Pasha in 1920. The government of the United Arab Republic nationalized the bank in 1960. The bank has branch offices in all of Egypt's governorates, and currency exchange and work permit offices for foreign workers in Egypt.
