Obverse

Depicts Lapland's emblematic animal, the reindeer, as an integral part of Lapland's nature. Country name in Finnish and Swedish above. Engraver's initial (e) below.

The reindeer is a semi-domesticated herd animal that has adapted excellently to the harsh conditions of the far North. Reindeer management is a traditional way of life in Lapland, in harmony with the cycle of nature, and has provided a livelihood for many inhabitants of the region for centuries. The number of reindeer herding in Finland is estimated at 200,000 heads.

Reverse

Depicts the historic coat of arms of Lapland, a region of Finland surrounded by the value and the date above. Engraver's initial (T) and the mint's logo (lion) on the right.

The coat of arms depicts in a silver square a scarlet savage with green birch wreaths on his head and hips, holding with his right hand a golden club, leaning on his shoulder. The savage in heraldry is an old symbol of the uncivilized north, which dominated the books and engravings of the 16th century.
