Description

The America the Beautiful Quarters are a series of 25-cent pieces (quarters) issued by the United States Mint from 2010 until at least 2021.

Homestead National Monument of America brings the epic homesteading story of early pioneers to life and demonstrates the true scope and importance of the Homestead Act of 1862. By granting free land, the Homestead Act allowed nearly any man or woman a chance to realize the American dream of owning his or her own land. The uniquely designed Heritage Center was dedicated in 2007 and offers a hilltop vista of the tallgrass prairie much like American pioneers would have seen it.

Quarters are issued depicting designs of national parks and sites in the order of which that park or site was deemed a national site. Release date (national site date): February 9, 2015 (March 19, 1936).

Reverse

The reverse side of the quarter has a design emblematic of the Homestead National Monument of America. It represents the three fundamentals of survival common to all homesteaders: food, shelter, and water. Although the land was cheap or free, many homesteaders did not last five years due to the blizzards, drought, grasshoppers, disease, and loneliness on the open prairies.

The restored Palmer-Epard Cabin was built in 1867. For more than sixty years, Palmers and Epards lived in the structure before it was converted to grain storage. The cabin, built of squared logs of mixed hardwoods, consists of a single, earth-floored room downstairs and a small attic. It was donated to the park in 1950 and has been moved and restored several times through the intervening years.
