Reverse

Depicts an adult swallowtail in flight. The sense of motion in the coin creates a strong dynamic, visually captured by the depiction of the caterpillar and its food plant. The inscription "Swallowtail” below, the engraver's initials on the right.

Of the approximately 3,700 butterfly species that are native to Germany, the swallowtail is one of the largest and most striking. It is an important pollinator of wild plants and, like other butterflies, its existence is threatened and it is a protected species.

Papilio machaon, the Old World swallowtail, is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae. The butterfly is also known as the common yellow swallowtail or simply the swallowtail.
