Seals, scientifically known as pinnipeds, encompass a diverse group of carnivorous marine mammals found in families such as Odobenidae, Otariidae, and Phocidae. With 34 living species and over 50 extinct ones, seals form a monophyletic lineage within the Caniformia clade of Carnivora. Ranging in size from the 1 m Baikal seal to the 5 m southern elephant seal, they are adapted for aquatic life with streamlined bodies and flippers. Preferring colder waters, seals spend most of their lives in the ocean, coming ashore for activities like mating, giving birth, and molting. Their diet primarily consists of fish and marine invertebrates. Mating strategies vary, with males often practicing polygyny, and female seals play a central role in raising pups born in spring and summer. Traditionally hunted by Arctic indigenous peoples, seals are now protected by international law, although some species, like the Japanese sea lion and Caribbean monk seal, have become extinct due to various threats including historical hunting, accidental trapping, marine pollution, climate change, and conflicts with local communities.
