The sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), also known as red salmon, kokanee salmon, blueback salmon, or simply sockeye, is a Pacific salmon species found in the Northern Pacific Ocean and its adjoining rivers. Recognized for its vibrant red hue during spawning, sockeye salmon can reach lengths of up to 84 cm (2 ft 9 in) and weigh between 2.3 to 7 kg (5–15 lb). These anadromous fish migrate up to 1,600 km (1,000 mi) from freshwater to the ocean after spending their juvenile stage in freshwater, where they primarily feed on zooplankton. Sockeye salmon are semelparous, meaning they die after spawning. Some populations, known as kokanee, forgo the ocean migration, living their entire lives in freshwater.
