The blue poison dart frog (Dendrobates tinctorius "azureus"), also known as the blue poison arrow frog, is a strikingly azure-colored amphibian found in the forest islands of southern Suriname's Sipaliwini Savanna. Indigenous to the Tiriyo people, this frog is known as "okopipi." While once considered its own species, it is now typically classified as a morph or subspecies of D. tinctorius. Blue poison dart frogs are small, growing up to 4.5 cm, with females slightly larger than males. Their vivid blue skin and unique black spots serve as a defense, warning predators of the toxic alkaloids secreted from their skin.
