The Panamanian golden frog (Atelopus zeteki), a toad species endemic to Panama, inhabits streams in the Cordilleran cloud forests. Once common, it has been listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN and may be extinct in the wild since 2007 due to habitat loss and chytridiomycosis. Captive breeding programs aim to preserve the species. Recognized for its striking yellow-gold skin, it is a national symbol of Panama. The frog produces potent toxins, including zetekitoxin AB, to ward off predators. Conservation efforts are ongoing in Panama and North America to save this iconic amphibian.
