The golden harlequin frog (Atelopus certus) is a critically endangered species of toad endemic to Panama. It inhabits the humid cloud forests along fast-flowing streams in the Darien region. This strikingly colored amphibian is characterized by its bright yellow or orange skin with black markings, serving as a warning to predators of its toxic nature. The species has been severely affected by habitat loss and the fungal disease chytridiomycosis, which has decimated populations of amphibians in Central and South America. Conservation efforts, including captive breeding programs, are underway to prevent its extinction.
