The Amazon horned frog (Ceratophrys cornuta), also known as the Surinam horned frog, is a large, stocky amphibian native to the rainforests of South America, particularly in the Amazon Basin. Named for its distinctive horn-like protrusions above its eyes, this frog has an exceptionally wide mouth and a striking color pattern that camouflages it in leaf litter on the forest floor. Known for its ambush hunting style, the Amazon horned frog waits motionless until prey—usually insects, other frogs, and even small mammals—comes close enough to capture with a sudden leap. With its ferocious appetite and unique appearance, this species is both a fascinating example of adaptation to the Amazon environment and a popular subject in herpetology.
